COURSE DETAILS

An unique opportunity to study with award winning writer & director Malachi Bogdanov on the Mediterranean island of Sardinia

Course includes accommodation & food – tuition in English & Italian
8th – 12th September 2008

Malachi Bogdanov trained with Jacque Lecoq at his famous school in Paris, where Commedia dell’Atre formed an integral part of the actor’s art. Now based in the beautiful Mediterranean island of Sardinia, he takes a break from pre-production for his next film ‘Homer’s the Odyssey - From Ithaca with Love’, to lead a Commedia dell’Atre workshop using traditional hand made leather masks made by Stefano Perocco.

Commedia dell’Atre plays an important role in Malachi’s film and theatre work and in this practical seminar he sets out to explore some of its most famous characters; including Pantalone, Arleccino, Il Capitano, Brighella, Zanni, Pulcinella, Il Dottore and Colombina. During the course each student will examine with Malachi the relationship of the mask with the audience, the history of Commedia dell’Arte and it’s relevance to contemporary theatre and Commedia dell’Arte as a training tool for the modern actor.

The student might gain an understanding of the extremes of acting which would employ his or her entire being. It serves as point of reference. Thus Commedia, where the play is action, and Greek Tragedy, where the word is flesh, are the form of theatre where the actor is entirely engaged; pelvis, solar plexus and head.
Jacques Lecoq

The intensive five day workshop provides six days accommodation. Tuition starts on Monday 8th September and ends on Friday 12th September with students arriving on the 7th and departing on the13th September.

The workshop takes place in medieval port of Alghero located on Sardinia’s northwest coast. Alghero is a stunningly beautiful, lively town and Sardinia is the largest of Italy’s Mediterranean islands, famed for its intense culture, fantastic beaches and outstanding food.
